When do I start looking for my hair accessories??
So firstly, make sure you have chosen your wedding dress before purchasing anything else; the dress style, shape and fabric will give you an idea of what to look for when researching wedding hair accessories. Wedding Hair accessories today offer so much choice! If you are finding it difficult to decide, then you can always come and have a chat to me in my little studio where you can view and try on all of my sample hair accessories – no obligation of course!
These are the first questions I am usually asked – “How do I go about choosing my wedding hair accessories?” , and “Do I choose my tiara or hair accessory before or after I have decided on my wedding hairstyle”?
One phrase comes to mind – What came first, the chicken or the egg! Personally, I think it’s best to decide on your wedding hair accessory before falling in love with a hairstyle. However, lots of my lovely brides come to their consultation with quite firm ideas on how they want to wear their hair on their big day. I can then advise on tiara, hair vine, comb or pins. I would chat to the bride finding out more about their wedding theme, wedding venue and the overall look they would love to achieve.
Sometimes, (actually quite often!) the bride will come into my little studio and fall in love with a certain headpiece, tiara etc. When this happens they can see a wedding hair stylist who will work with the design to create a hairstyle to complement it. I also recommend some fab local wedding hair people if they haven’t already found one.
Do I choose a tiara, hair vine, or comb?
So if you’re planning to wear your hair up, hair combs add detail and interest to a chignon, bun or braid. But equally a tiara will work well with an elegant updo.

In the above image, Cesca looks beautiful in her Katie Wedding Tiara (which we made slightly taller for her to create more impact). Her gorgeous wedding updo was created by the ever so talented (and ever so lovely!) Tori at Riot hairdressing. The ivory pearls show up beautifully against Cescas shiny dark hair. Tiaras are timeless and are definately making a huge comeback after the recent royal weddings. After all, who doesn’t want to feel and look like a princess on her wedding day! It’s not every day you get to wear one.
If you are going for a boho or more relaxed look then Hair vines are my first choice. They are so versatile and really flexible and light. My brides have often said that they even forgot they are wearing anything in their hair on the wedding day as the wedding hair vine was so comfortable.

The about photo shows Tracy wearing her bespoke wedding hair vine which I made using blush (my fave colour!) freshwater pearls with Sparkly Swarovski crystals (I only ever use Swarovski crystals, nothing sparkles like them!). We worked together and I based this design on the Evie Wedding Hairvine but Tracy wanted it to be more symmetrical across the back of her wedding updo.

If you want something to add just a little sparkle or detail to your hair, why not opt for a comb – large or small , they look gorgeous in a wedding updo. They also look great in a low chignon at the back or on the side, with a few strands of hair falling around the face, the comb will add detail without detracting from the detail on the dress and jewellery. Half up, half down hair styles will also look good with a sparkly comb placed at the back, sitting on the crown.

Wedding Hair pins are great when worn in clusters. I usually recommend odd numbers as this works better especially when the hair pins are tucked into a loose updo. Pins are also perfect for bridesmaids and I can design them to match the brides tiara or headpiece to follow the theme through the whole bridal party.
Whichever you choose, be sure to bring it (or them) along to your wedding hair trial so that your hair stylist can perfect your overall wedding hair look and advise on how best to use them in your hair.
Can I wear a tiara or hair vine if I am wearing a veil?
Yes! I personally love a veil (who doesn’t!). Depending on how you are planning to wear your veil, you may want it to show from the front , in which case it will be attached behind the tiara or hair vine (if you are wearing this across your head). If you have a low bun or updo, you may prefer the veil tucked in at the back for a more relaxed boho look. The hair vine or comb can be placed either above the veil or underneath and then the veil can be removed if required after the ceremony ready for the reception.
Can I wear hair accessories if I have short hair?
Quite often brides will contact me and be worrying that they can’t wear a tiara or anything pretty in their hair if they have short hair. Actually tiaras look quite striking in short cropped hair. Wedding Combs and hair pins are more difficult to use with short hair as there needs to be something to secure to. If the bride is against a tiara I would suggest a delicate head band or side detail tiara which I can wrap the band in a ribbon colour to match the hair colour. The band is then hidden in the hair and gives the illusion that the bride is wearing a comb or pins. A band is easy to wear and the bands I use here are super comfy and don’t dig in the head (my worst nightmare!).

Yozanne (such a beautiful bride!) had very short hair in a gorgeous rich auburn colour and chose the Aimee Lace Headpiece with the band hidden in her hair.
To sum it up, your hair accessory is just as important as your wedding dress! After all, it will be seen in every photograph. If you are overwhelmed with all the different styles of tiaras, hair vines, wedding combs, wedding hair pins and more – please give me a call or message me and we can work together to create the perfect one for you. xxx
